It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
