11×17 calendar template word
It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
