15 minute schedule template
It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
