2 round label template
It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
