2019 2019 calendar template
It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
