It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
