2019 monthly calendar template
It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
