It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
