It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
