It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
