It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
