5 year business plan template
It might look like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
