It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
