It might look like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
