90 day plan template
It may look like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
