It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
