It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
