It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
