It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
