It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
