agile release plan template
It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
