It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
