It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
