It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
