It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
