It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
