It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
