It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
