It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
