It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
