It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
