It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
