It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
