It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
