It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
