It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
