It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
