It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
