It may look like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
