It may look like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
