It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
