It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
