It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
