It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
