It might look like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
