It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
