It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
