It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
