It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
