It may look like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
